One of the servants of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) was Bukayr b. Shaddah al-Laysī.
Ibn Mandah narrated from ʿAbd al-Malik b. Yaʿlā al-Laysī that Bukayr b. Shaddah al-Laysī used to serve the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He reached puberty. He informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of this and said:
– I enter and leave among your family. And now I have reached puberty, O Messenger of God, he said. Thereupon, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
– O Allah, confirm his word and grant him victory.
In the time of ʿUmar, a Jew was killed. ʿUmar stood up and delivered a sermon and said:
– For the sake of Allah, if anyone has knowledge about this matter, let him speak. Bukayr stood up and said:
– O Commander of the Believers, I am the one who killed him, he said. Thereupon, ʿUmar said:
– You have incurred the sin of his blood. Now, where is the way out and salvation? he asked. Bukayr then said:
– O trustworthy one of the believers! A man from among the warriors had appointed me to guard his family while he went on campaign. When I arrived, I saw that the Jew whom I killed was with that warrior's wife, and I heard him say:
"Islam has kept and deceived Ashʿath away from me. So I spent the whole night alone with his wife.
I spent the night upon his wife's breast. Ashʿath, however, spends his nights upon dusty halters.
The space between his wife's thighs resembles a group of men, who rush into crowds."
Upon this, ʿUmar confirmed Bukayr's statement and, recalling the above-mentioned supplication of the Messenger of God, left the Jew's blood without retaliation.
