Shaykh ʿAbīd Jalāleddīn

Shaykh ʿAbīd Jalāleddīn Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm b. Zaynaddīn Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Maḥmūd b. Muḥammad al-ʿUkaylī. He was known by the name Ibn Kalānīsī. He was born in the year 654 AH. He studied the hadith juzʾ of Ibn ʿĀrifa from Ibn ʿAbduddāym. He transmitted it repeatedly. He also listened to hadith from others. He engaged in the arts of writing and composition. Then he abandoned all these and devoted himself to zuhd (asceticism) and ʿibāda (worship). The emirs in Egypt had a zawiya built for him. People would come and go to visit him. He was a cheerful, eloquent speaker, but slow to hear. Later he emigrated to Jerusalem. Once he came to Dimashq. People gathered around him and offered him hospitality. He taught hadith and delivered sermons in Dimashq. Then he returned to Jerusalem. He passed away on the night of Sunday, the third of Dhū al-Qaʿda, in Jerusalem. He was buried in the Mamillī Cemetery. May Allah have mercy on him. He was the maternal uncle of the muḥtasib Izzaddīn b. Kalānīsī. Izzaddīn was also the maternal uncle of Ṣāḥib Taqiyyuddīn b. Maramtīn.
