Shaykh ʿAlī al-Muhārifī b. Aḥmad b. Ḥawwas al-Ḥilālī. His grandfather was from the town of ʿIlū'l-Būsūk. His father resided in Jerusalem. He performed the ḥajj once and in the year he performed it, he lived as a muǧāwir (resident near the sacred precinct) in Mecca. He was a righteous and well-known person. He was known by the name al-Muhārifī. He used to arrange the streets and straighten the sidewalks for the sake of Allah's pleasure. He would loudly and frequently perform dhikr by saying “lā ilāha illā llāh” (there is no deity but Allah). He was a dignified and solemn individual. He spoke words that warned people by instilling fear of the Hellfire and cautioned them so that they would not face a dangerous end. He regularly attended the gatherings of Ibn Taymiyya. He passed away on Tuesday, the twenty-third of Rabīʿ al-Awwal in this year. He was buried in the Qāsyūn Cemetery beside the tomb of Shaykh Muwafaq al-Dīn. A large crowd attended his funeral. May Allah have mercy on him.
