He was an ascetic and devout worshipper. His kunyah was Abū'l-Baqāʾ. His real name was Maḥmūd ibn ʿUthmān ibn Makārim al-Naʿalī. He belonged to the Ḥanbalī madhhab and was a person devoted to worship and mujahadah (spiritual struggle), and he traveled extensively. He established a khānqāh in Bab al-ʿAzīz. There, scholars from al-Maqdis (Jerusalem) resided. He preferred them over others and showed kindness and ihsān (spiritual excellence) to them. He listened to ḥadīth, recited the Qurʾān, enjoined good, and forbade evil. Having surpassed eighty years of age, he passed away this year.
