He was the imam, scholar, allāmah, and mufti of the Muslims. He bore the epithet Ṣadr al-Kāmil (the Perfect Leader). His lineage is as follows: Zayn al-Dīn Abū'l-Barakāt b. Munjī b. Ṣadr Izz al-Dīn Abū ʿUmar ʿUthmān b. ʿAsad b. Munjī b. Barakāt b. Mutawakkil al-Tanūhī. He was the shaykh and scholar of the Ḥanbalīs. He was born in the year 631 AH. He listened to ḥadīth, studied fiqh, and excelled in usūl (principles), furūʿ (branches), Arabic, tafsīr (Qur'anic exegesis), and many other sciences. The leadership of the madhhab was entrusted to him. He authored works on usūl. He wrote a commentary on al-Muqannaʿ. He left annotations on tafsīr. He was of good conduct, pleasant demeanor, pious, learned, reputable, of sound intellect, correct creed, and beneficial in disputation. He gave much charity and was charitable. He regularly attended the mosque and was always engaged in this work. Finally, he passed away on a Thursday in the month of Shaʿbān.
His wife, Umm Muḥammad Sitt Bahāʾ bint Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Ḥujandī, also passed away with him. After ʿAṣr prayer on Friday, funeral prayers were performed at the Damascus Mosque. Both were taken together to the cemetery on Qāsyūn. They were buried in the same tomb beneath the garden on the northern side of the Muzaffarī Mosque. May Almighty Allah have mercy on both of them. Shaykh Zayn al-Dīn b. Munjī was the father of Qāḍī al-Quḍāt ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn. He was the teacher of the Mismariyya Madrasa. After his death, his sons Sharaf al-Dīn and ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn were appointed there. He was also a teacher at the Ḥanbalīya Madrasa. After his death, Shaykh Taqī al-Dīn b. Taymiyya served there as a mudarris (teacher). Indeed, as we mentioned in previous sections while recounting the events of this year, we also spoke of this.
