He was one of the four great commanders. He was the commander of Palestine. His lineage is as follows: Shurahbīl b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muṭaʿ b. Qaṭan al-Kindī. He was an ally of the Banū Zuhra tribe. Ḥasene is his mother's name. He became known by his mother's name and became Muslim in the earliest period of Islam. He migrated to Abyssinia. Abū Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent him to al-Sham (Greater Syria). He commanded one fourth of the army. He continued this duty during the time of ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) as well. In the eighteenth year after the Hijra, he, Abū ʿUbayda, and Abū Mālik al-Ashʿarī all fell ill and passed away on the same day. Two hadith are narrated from him by Ibn Mājah.
