The Qur'anic Exegete al-Wāḥidī

His real name was ʿAlī b. Ḥasan b. Aḥmad b. ʿAlī b. Būwayh al-Wāḥidī. Ibn Ḥallikān said: "I do not know the reason why he was given the nisba al-Wāḥidī." Al-Wāḥidī has three tafsīrs (Qur'anic commentaries) titled al-Bāṣit, al-Wāsiṭ, and al-Wajīz. al-Ghazālī also took the titles of his books from him. Al-Wāḥidī also authored works titled Asbāb al-Nuzūl (Reasons for Revelation) and al-Taḥbīr fī Sharḥ al-Asmāʾ al-Ḥusnā (Elucidation in the Commentary on the Most Beautiful Names [of God]). He wrote a commentary on the dīwān (collected poems) of al-Mutanabbī: although this dīwān has been commented on by many, there is no commentary as magnificent as his. He attained felicity in his compositions. People agreed on the excellence of his works, and teachers taught his works in their lessons. He learned his tafsīr from al-Sālibī. He was ill for a while. Then he passed away in the month of Jumādā al-Ākhirah in this year in Nishapur.
