Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī relates from Muʿāwiya b. Ḥarmal, who said:
"A fire was seen on the black stony ground of Medina. Upon this, ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Tamīm al-Dārī and said:
- Come, let us go to that fire. To this, he replied:
- O Commander of the Believers, who am I, what am I that I should go there?
ʿUmar insisted, and finally, Tamīm al-Dārī, having no choice, got up and went with him to the fire. I too followed them there. They approached the fire. Tamīm al-Dārī pushed the fire with his hands, pushed and pushed, until he brought it up to his throat. He himself entered there after the fire. At that moment, ʿUmar was saying:
- The one who sees is not like the one who does not see (He repeated this statement three times)."
