His real name was ʿĪsā b. ʿAbd Allāh Abū ʿAbd al-Munʿim al-Madanī. He was a freedman of the Banū Mahzūm tribe. He was a brilliant master in his craft. He was a tall man, with strabismic eyes and a slender body, and was considered inauspicious. This was because he was born on the day of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him)'s death, was weaned on the day of Abū Bakr's death, reached puberty on the day ʿUmar was martyred, married on the day ʿUthmān was martyred, and had a son on the day Ḥusayn, the son of ʿAlī, was killed. According to another narration, a son was born to him on the day ʿAlī was martyred. Ibn Khallikān and others have stated this.
