He is among the noble Companions (ṣaḥāba) of exalted rank. He is held in high esteem. Due to his abundant worship and his extreme asceticism, he was regarded as a person unique in his own kind. He was present at the conquest of Syria (Shām) alongside Abū ʿUbayda. During the time of ʿUmar, he served as governor of Ḥimṣ and Damascus (Dimashq). When ʿUthmān became caliph, he dismissed him from the governorship. The entirety of Syria was then placed under the administration of Muʿāwiya. There are many reports concerning this individual.
