Qutayba b. Saʿīd narrated through Sufyān from Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"(O Jābir), if the wealth from Bahrain arrives, I will give you such-and-such, such-and-such, and such-and-such." The Messenger of God repeated the phrase "such-and-such" three times. However, until the death of the Messenger of God, no wealth from Bahrain had arrived.
When this wealth arrived during the caliphate of Abū Bakr, Abū Bakr ordered the crier. He made the following announcement:
– Whoever has a claim against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or to whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made a promise, let him come to me.
Jābir said: I went to Abū Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). I informed him that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) had said to me: "If the wealth from Bahrain arrives, I will give you such-and-such, such-and-such, and such-and-such." But he turned away from me. Later, when I met Abū Bakr again, I asked him for the wealth, but he did not give it to me. I went again, and again he did not give it. The third time I went, again he did not give it. I said to him:
"I came to you, and you did not give it to me. Then I came again, and again you did not give it to me. Now, either you give it to me or you are being stingy towards me." Abū Bakr asked me:
– Did you say I am being stingy towards you? Is there any illness worse than stinginess? (Abū Bakr repeated this statement three times.) Every time I did not give you the wealth, I certainly intended to give it to you."
Al-Bukhārī then narrates through ʿAmr that Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh said:
"When I went to him, Abū Bakr said to me:
– Count these.
I counted them and found them to be 500 dirhams. He then said to me:
– Take twice as much as that."
Al-Bukhārī also narrates through ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī that Jābir said:
"Abū Bakr poured the dirhams in front of me with his hand and told me to count them. When I counted, I found them to be 500 dirhams. He added twice as much again."
Thus, Abū Bakr gave him a total of 1,500 dirhams.
