It is narrated on the authority of Abu Abdullah Nu’man Ibn Bashir, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Either straighten your ranks, or Allah will sow dissension, hatred, and disagreement into your hearts and you will turn away from one another.”

93; Tirmidhi, Mawakit 53; Ibn Maja, Iqama 50 Muslim’s another narration is as follows: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to straighten our ranks as if he were straightening arrows. He continued to do so until we became accustomed to it. One day he came out for prayer and stood where he would lead the prayer. As he was about to say Takbir, he saw a man whose chest protruded from the rank. Then he said:

  1. 1There is encouragement to keep the rows straight in prayer.
  2. 2Speech during the time between takbir and starting the prayer does not constitute an impediment to the prayer, nor is it necessary to repeat the takbir. However, some scholars have stated that this speech should be on a matter related to the prayer. They said that conversations unrelated to prayer would require repetition of the takbir.
  3. 3One must adhere to the etiquette established by the Sunnah. Those who oppose the Sunnah are subject to punishment materially or spiritually.
