Hikem-i Ataiyye 77. hikmet Arapça metni

Whenever the Real (God Most High) bestows upon you His obedience (ṭāʿa) and, without your need for obedience, also provides for you with His own maʿrifa (gnosis, experiential knowledge of God), know that He has adorned you with both His outward and inward blessings.

Poetic Translation

Whenever the Real provides for you

With obedience and sufficiency beyond obedience,

Know that the Real has completed His favor upon you

By fulfilling both outward and inward blessings.

Explanation

By obedience (ṭāʿa) is meant: conforming to divine commands and avoiding prohibitions. Sufficiency from worship in relation to the Divine means that, in attaining the sought-after goal, the heart is wholly attached to the Lord (God Most High) without inclination toward acts of worship, and is purified from all besides Allah.

The outward blessing is worship; the inward blessing is maʿrifa (gnosis, experiential knowledge of God). Thus, a murīd (aspirant, disciple) has two aims in terms of servanthood: one is fulfilling the divine command outwardly, the other is inwardly seeking refuge in Allah. A servant who is with Allah has no need for anything besides Allah—whether it be worship or anything else...

If a sālik (spiritual traveler) is provided with these two sacred tasks, he attains the divine blessing both outwardly and inwardly, and achieves his goal in both worlds.
