Verse (āya) is interpreted in two ways:
1. Verse (āya) is used in the sense of a lesson or sign to take heed from, as in the following verses:
We made the son of Mary and his mother a verse (āya) {that is, a lesson to take heed from}. (al-Muʾminūn 23:50)
So We saved him and those with him in the ship and made it a verse (āya) for the worlds {that is, a lesson to take heed from}. (al-ʿAnkabūt 29:15)
A similar example is found in Sūrat al-Qamar.
Indeed in that are verses (āyāt) {that is, lessons to take heed from} for a people who believe. (al-Naḥl 16:79)
2. Verse (āya) is used in the sense of a sign or indicator, as in the following verses:
And a verse (āya) for them is that We carried their offspring in the laden ship {that is, a sign}. (Yā Sīn 36:41)
And of His verses (āyāt) is that He created you from dust; then, suddenly you were human beings dispersing [throughout the earth]. {that is, among the signs that your Lord is One and Unique}. (al-Rūm 30:20)
And of His verses (āyāt) is that the heaven and earth stand by His command {that is, by His act and will}; {that is, among the signs that your Lord is One and Unique. Therefore, recognize and know His oneness (tawhid) through His acts and artistry}. (al-Rūm 30:25)
And of His verses (āyāt) is that He created for you from yourselves mates {that is, among the signs that your Lord is One and Unique. Therefore, recognize and know His oneness (tawhid) through His artistry and acts}. (al-Rūm 30:21)
There are many similar verses (āyāt).
