'Azīz is interpreted in six ways:
1. 'Azīz is used in the sense of protected, possessing immunity, invulnerable, strong, and resilient; as in the following verses:
Allah is 'azīz (i.e., invulnerable—none can harm Allah), ḥakīm (wise). (al-Nisāʾ 4:158, 165; al-Fatḥ 48:17, 19)
(It will be said to Abū Jahl:) "Taste! Indeed, you are 'azīz (i.e., protected / invulnerable—none can harm you) and karīm (noble)!" (al-Dukhān 44:49)
The 'azīz (i.e., strong) will expel the abased from there. (al-Munāfiqūn 63:8)
Do they seek ʿizza (i.e., protection, invulnerability) with them?! (al-Nisāʾ 4:139)
Whoever desires ʿizza (i.e., protection / a position where one cannot be harmed)... (Fāṭir 35:10)
There are many similar verses.
2. 'Azīz is used in the sense of ʿaẓīm (very great, magnificent, valuable); as in the following verses:
I swear by Your ʿizza (i.e., Your greatness / magnificence), I will surely mislead them all. (Ṣād 38:82)
{They said to Shuʿayb:} "And you are not, in our view, 'azīz (i.e., great, valuable)." (Hūd 11:91)
By the ʿizza (i.e., greatness, magnificence) of Pharaoh... (al-Shuʿarāʾ 26:44)
They make the 'azīz (i.e., those of great honor) among its people abased. (al-Naml 27:34)
O 'azīz (i.e., one great in sovereignty / magnificence)... (Yūsuf 12:78, 88)
The wife of the 'azīz (i.e., the one great in sovereignty)... (Yūsuf 12:30, 51)
3. al-ʿIzza is used in the sense of ḥamiyyat (pride, arrogance); as in the following verses:
His ʿizza (i.e., pride / arrogance) drives him to sin. (al-Baqara 2:206)
They are in ʿizza and shiqāq (i.e., pride / arrogance and discord). (Ṣād 38:2)
4. al-ʿIzza is used in the sense of ghalīẓ (harsh, severe); as in the following verse:
Firm (ʿizza) against the disbelievers (i.e., harsh and severe towards them)... (al-Māʾida 5:54)
5. 'Azīz is used in the sense of severe, grave, difficult; as in the following verses:
Your suffering is 'azīz (i.e., severe, grave/difficult for him—due to his love for you). (al-Tawba 9:128)
This is not 'azīz (i.e., severe, grave/difficult) for Allah. (Ibrāhīm 14:20)
A similar statement is found in Sūrat Fāṭir.
6. 'Azīz means strong / intense in strength; as in the following verse:
So We strengthened (the two We sent) with a third, making them 'azīz (i.e., We reinforced the two with a third). (Yā-Sīn 36:14)
Zuheyr b. ʿAbbād said regarding the statement of the Exalted Allah, We sent to them two men (.....) then We reinforced them with a third (Yā-Sīn 36:14): The "two men" mentioned are Yaḥyā and Yūnus; the "third" is the chief of the disciples, Shamʿūn.
