Ednā is interpreted in four senses:
1. The term ednā is used in the sense of more appropriate, more worthy, or more suitable; as in the following verses:
This... is more solid for testimony and ednā {that is, more suitable so that you do not fall into doubt}. (al-Baqara 2:282)
This is ednā {that is, more suitable} so that you do not deviate. (al-Nisāʾ 4:3)
This is ednā {that is, more suitable} for them to properly fulfill the testimony... (al-Māʾida 5:108)
2. The term ednā is used in the sense of closer; as in the following verses:
And We will surely let them taste the nearer punishment {that is, the punishment of hunger in this world, which is closer} before the greater punishment {that is, the punishment of the Fire in the Hereafter}. (al-Sajda 32:21)
Do not press them to take back part of what you have given them unless they commit a clear immorality {that is, unless they act rebelliously, disobediently, or defiantly}. (al-Nisāʾ 4:19)
Do not expel them from their homes unless they commit a clear immorality {that is, unless they act rebelliously, disobediently, or defiantly}, nor should they leave. (al-Ṭalāq 65:1)
He was two bow-lengths away or even ednā {that is, closer}. (al-Najm 53:9)
3. The term ednā is used in the sense of less; as in the following verse:
There is no private conversation among three but that He is the fourth of them, nor among five but that He is the sixth of them, nor fewer than that {that is, ednā, less}, nor more, but that He is with them. (al-Mujādila 58:7)
4. The term ednā also means lower or inferior. When the Children of Israel requested that, instead of manna and quails, they be given legumes and similar produce of the earth, this meaning was used in the address to them:
He said, "Would you exchange what is better for ednā {that is, what is lower/inferior, the produce of the earth}? Go down to any settlement and indeed, you will have what you have asked." (al-Baqara 2:61)
