al-Arḍ is interpreted in seven ways:

1. By al-Arḍ, the "paradisal earth" is meant; as in the following verse:

He made us inherit the earth {that is, the paradisal earth}; we may settle wherever we wish in Paradise. (al-Zumar 39:74)

And We have already written in the Book [of Psalms] after the dhikr (reminder) that My righteous servants shall inherit the earth {that is, specifically the paradisal earth}. (al-Anbiyāʾ 21:105)

2. By al-Arḍ, specifically the Holy Land (Arḍ al-Muqaddasa) in al-Shām is meant; as in the following verse:

And We made the oppressed people inherit the eastern parts of the earth (that is, of Jordan and Palestine)... (al-Aʿrāf 7:137)

And We saved him and Lot and brought them to the land which We had blessed for the worlds {that is, the Holy Land}. (al-Anbiyāʾ 21:71)

3. By al-Arḍ, specifically the land/territory of Medina is meant; as in the following verses:

O My believing servants! Indeed, My earth {that is, specifically the land of Medina} is spacious. So worship only Me! (al-ʿAnkabūt 29:56)

With this command, they are ordered to emigrate there [to Medina].

Was not the earth of Allah {that is, the land of Medina} spacious enough for you to emigrate therein? (al-Nisāʾ 4:97)

Whoever emigrates for the cause of Allah will find on the earth many [alternative] locations and abundance. (al-Nisāʾ 4:100)

4. By al-Arḍ, specifically the land/territory of Mecca is meant; as in the following verses:

Do they not see that We come to the earth (that is, the land/territory of Mecca) reducing it from its borders? (al-Raʿd 13:41)

They will say, "What put you in such a condition?" They will say, "We were oppressed in the land (that is, the land/territory of Mecca)." (al-Nisāʾ 4:97)

Do they not see that We come to the earth {that is, specifically the land/territory of Mecca} reducing it from its borders? So are they the victors? (al-Anbiyāʾ 21:44)

5. By the word al-Arḍ, specifically the land/territory of Egypt is meant; as in the following verses:

[Joseph said]: "Appoint me over the storehouses of the land (that is, the land of Egypt)." (Yūsuf 12:55)

And thus We established Joseph in the land (that is, the land/territory of Egypt). (Yūsuf 12:21)

[The eldest of Joseph's brothers said]: "I will never leave this land (that is, the land of Egypt) until my father permits me..." (Yūsuf 12:80)

Indeed, Pharaoh exalted himself in the land {that is, the land of Egypt}. (al-Qaṣaṣ 28:4)

But We intended to favor those who were oppressed in the land (that is, the land of Egypt)... (al-Qaṣaṣ 28:5)

And to establish them in the land (that is, the land of Egypt)... (al-Qaṣaṣ 28:6)

Indeed, the land (that is, the land of Egypt) belongs to Allah. He causes to inherit it whom He wills of His servants. (al-Aʿrāf 7:128)

Perhaps your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you successors in the land (that is, the land of Egypt). (al-Aʿrāf 7:129)

...or that he should cause corruption in the land {that is, the land of Egypt}. (al-Muʾmin 40:26)

O my people! Today sovereignty is yours, [being] dominant in the land {that is, the land of Egypt}. (al-Muʾmin 40:29)

6. By al-Arḍ, the lands of the Muslims are meant; as in the following verse:

Indeed, Gog and Magog are causing corruption in the land (that is, in the lands of the Muslims). (al-Kahf 18:94)

7. By al-Arḍ, the whole earth is meant; as in the following verses:

There is no creature moving on the earth (that is, on the whole earth) nor any bird flying with its wings but... (al-Anʿām 6:38)

If all the trees on the earth (that is, on the whole earth) were pens... (Luqmān 31:27)
