al-Ashhād is interpreted in six ways:
1. al-Ashhād is used in the sense of bearing witness to the proclamation (tablīgh)—and those who proclaim are meant to be the prophets (anbiyāʾ)—as in the following verses:
When We bring from every community a witness {that is, their prophet who will bear witness against them that he conveyed the message}, and We bring you {O Muhammad} as a witness over them {that is, as a witness that you conveyed the message}, what will their state be then?! (al-Nisāʾ 4:41)
On that Day, We will bring forth from every community a witness {that is, We will bring their prophet as a witness over them}. (al-Naḥl 16:84)
As long as I was among them, I was a witness over them. (al-Māʾida 5:117)
The witnesses {that is, the prophets} will say, "These are {that is, the disbelievers among their people} those who lied against their Lord" {that is, those who claimed partners with Allah}. (Hūd 11:18)
2. The word al-Shahīd is used in the sense of the recording angel who writes the deeds of the son of Adam, as in the following verses:
Every soul will come with a driver and a witness {that is, the angel who writes their deeds}. (Qāf 50:21)
In this verse, the word shahīd refers to "the recording angel who writes their deeds in this world," who will also bear witness regarding their deeds in the Hereafter.
The prophets and the martyrs {that is, the recording angels who will bear witness regarding their deeds} will be brought... (al-Zumar 39:69)
Indeed, We will support Our messengers and those who believe in the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses {that is, the recording angels} will stand. (al-Muʾmin 40:51)
3. By shuhadāʾ, the Umma of Muhammad is meant, due to their bearing witness to what the prophets proclaimed; as in the following verses:
Thus We have made you a middle nation so that you may be witnesses {that is, witnesses that the messengers conveyed the message to their people} over mankind... (al-Baqara 2:143)
Before this and in this... so that the Messenger may be a witness over you and you may be witnesses {that is, witnesses that the messengers conveyed the message to their peoples} over mankind. (al-Ḥajj 22:78)
Write us among the witnesses {that is, together with the Umma of Muhammad}. (al-Māʾida 5:83)
4. By al-Shahīd, the one who is martyred in the path of Allah is meant, as in the following verses:
They are with those whom Allah has favored: the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs {that is, those martyred in the path of Allah}, and the righteous. (al-Nisāʾ 4:69)
With their Lord, they are considered martyrs {that is, they are those martyred in the path of Allah; for them is their reward and their light}. (al-Ḥadīd 57:19)
5. By al-Shahīd, bearing witness regarding the right of a person or the rights of people is meant; as in the following verses:
Call to witness two witnesses from among your men {that is, for this transaction regarding rights}; but if there are not two men, then one man and two women from among those you accept as witnesses... (al-Baqara 2:282)
There are many similar examples.
Take two just witnesses from among you {that is, in cases of divorce and reconciliation}; and establish the testimony for Allah. (al-Ṭalāq 65:2)
6. Shahīd is used in the sense of being present, as in the following verses:
If a calamity befalls you, he will say, "Allah favored me in that I was not present {that is, shahīd} with them." (al-Nisāʾ 4:72)
When We decreed the command to Moses, you were not on the western side, nor were you among the witnesses {that is, those present there}. (al-Qaṣaṣ 28:44)
Sons present {that is, present in Mecca}... (al-Muddaththir 74:13)
Those who do not bear witness to falsehood {that is, they are not present at or do not attend it}. (al-Furqān 25:72)
Or were you witnesses {that is, were you present} when death came to Jacob? (al-Baqara 2:133)
Let a group of them witness their punishment {that is, let them be present when they are punished}. (al-Nūr 24:2)
