al-Ḥashr is interpreted in two ways:
1. al-Ḥashr is used in the sense of gathering / assembling; as in the following verses:
On the Day He will gather them {that is, bring them together / assemble them}, it will be as if they had not remained [in the world] except for an hour of a day... (al-Yūnus 10:45)
A similar usage is also found in Sūrat al-Furqān.
We will have gathered them {that is, assembled / brought them together}, leaving none of them behind. (al-Kahf 18:47)
When the wild beasts are gathered {that is, assembled / brought together}... (al-Takwīr 81:5)
The armies of Solomon from among the jinn, mankind, and birds were gathered before him {that is, assembled}. (al-Naml 27:17)
And the birds were gathered {that is, assembled} for him; all with him were repeatedly turning [to Allah]. (Ṣād 38:19)
There are many similar statements.
2. Ḥashr is also used in the sense of driving [to move forward, to herd, to lead]; as in the following verses:
Gather {that is, after they are called to account, drive those who wronged, along with their partners in shirk (associating partners with God) and the devils who were with them, and lead them to the path of Hellfire!} (al-Ṣāffāt 37:22-23)
We will gather them on the Day of Resurrection on their faces {that is, on the Day of Resurrection, We will drive them on their faces to the Fire}. (al-Isrāʾ 17:97)
We will gather the criminals {that is, We will drive the disbelievers} that Day {that is, after the reckoning, to Hell} blue-eyed [with terror]. (Ṭā-Hā 20:102)
