al-Ḥikma is interpreted in five ways:

1. By al-Ḥikma, what is meant is the admonitions consisting of the commands and prohibitions in the Qur'an; as in the following verses:

From the Book He has sent down to you {that is, from the Qur'an} and al-Ḥikma {that is, from the admonitions in the Qur'an concerning commands, prohibitions, the lawful and the unlawful}... (al-Baqara/231)

Allah has sent down to you the Book {that is, the Qur'an} and al-Ḥikma {that is, the lawful and the unlawful mentioned in Sūrat al-Baqara}. (al-Nisāʾ/113)

He will teach him the Book {that is, the Qur'an} and al-Ḥikma {that is, the admonitions in the Qur'an of the kind of lawful and unlawful}... (Āl ʿImrān/48)

A similar instance of this also occurs in Sūrat Āl ʿImrān.

We gave him {that is, to Yaḥyā} judgment {that is, understanding [comprehension] and knowledge} while he was yet a child. (Maryam/12)

2. By al-Ḥukm, what is meant is understanding [comprehension] and knowledge; as in the following verses:

And We certainly gave Luqmān wisdom {that is, understanding [comprehension] and knowledge}. (Luqmān/12)

To each We gave judgment {that is, understanding [comprehension]} and knowledge. (al-Anbiyāʾ/79)

They are those to whom We gave the Book, judgment {that is, understanding [comprehension] and knowledge}, and prophethood. (al-Anʿām/89)

3. By al-Ḥikma, what is meant is prophethood; as in the following verses:

We gave the family of Abraham the Book and wisdom {that is, prophethood}. (al-Nisāʾ/54)

We gave him wisdom {that is, prophethood} and decisive speech. (Ṣād/20)

Allah gave him sovereignty and wisdom {that is, prophethood}. (al-Baqara/251)

4. By al-Ḥikma, what is meant is the tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis) of the Qur'an; as in the following verse:

Whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. (al-Baqara/269)

5. By al-Ḥikma, what is meant is the Qur'an; as in the following verse:

Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom {that is, with the Qur'an}! (al-Naḥl/125)
