al-Ḥisāb is interpreted in two ways:
1. Ḥisāb is used in the sense of recompense; as in the following verses:
If you should be reminded, their ḥisāb {that is, their recompense} is not but upon my Lord. (al-Shuʿarāʾ 26:113)
His ḥisāb {that is, his recompense} is only with his Lord. (al-Muʾminūn 23:117)
Then, indeed, their ḥisāb {that is, their recompense} is upon Us. (al-Ghāshiya 88:26)
In the commands in the surahs al-Ṭalāq and al-Nabaʾ, it is also used in this sense.
2. By the term al-Ḥisāb, what is meant is the calculation and reckoning of days, months, and years—that is, the well-known reckoning; as in the following verses:
That you may know the number and calculation (ḥisāb) of years {that is, the reckoning of days, months, and years}. (al-Isrāʾ 17:12)
We made the sun and the moon for ḥisāb {that is, so that you may know the number and calculation of years}. (al-Anʿām 6:96)
