al-Ḥiss is interpreted in four senses:
1. Aḥassa [he sensed], meaning he saw; as in the following verses:
When ʿĪsā sensed from them kufr (disbelief) {that is, he saw it}... (Āl ʿImrān 3:52)
When they sensed Our punishment {that is, they saw Our punishment}... (al-Anbiyāʾ 21:12)
Do you sense {that is, see} any one of them? (Maryam 19:98)
2. The word al-Ḥass is used in the sense of killing; as in the following verse:
Indeed, Allah fulfilled His promise to you when you were sensing them —by His permission— {that is, you were killing them}. (Āl ʿImrān 3:152)
3. The word al-Ḥass is used in the sense of searching; as in the following verse:
(Yaʿqūb said): "O my sons! Go and tahassus (search) for Yūsuf and his brother" {that is, search for (Yūsuf and his brother)}! (Yūsuf 12:87)
4. The word al-Ḥiss is used in the sense of sound; as in the following verse:
They will not hear its ḥasīs (that is, its/the fire's sound), and they will abide eternally in what their souls desire. (al-Anbiyāʾ 21:102)
