al-Ḥusrān is interpreted in five ways:
1. Ḥāṣir, in the sense of incapable or powerless persons; as in the following verses:
"If a wolf were to eat him while we are a strong group, then indeed, we would surely be ḥāṣirūn (i.e., powerless persons)." (Yūsuf 12:14)
"If you follow a human being like yourselves, then indeed you would be ḥāṣirūn (i.e., powerless persons)." (al-Muʾminūn 23:34)
"If you follow Shuʿayb, then you would surely be ḥāṣirūn (i.e., powerless persons)." (al-Aʿrāf 7:90)
2. al-Ḥāṣirūn, in the sense of deceivers, the deceived, or those who are led astray; as in the following verses:
Say: "Indeed, the true losers are those who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection (i.e., those who deceive themselves by going to the Fire, and those who are deceived: their spouses and servants, because they go to Paradise). Unquestionably, that is the manifest loss." (az-Zumar 39:15)
"The true losers are those who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection (i.e., those who deceive themselves, their spouses, and their servants by going or being exposed to the Fire). Unquestionably, the wrongdoers will be in an enduring punishment." (ash-Shūrā 42:45)
There are many similar verses.
3. al-Ḥusrān, in the sense of misguidance (ḍalāla); as in the following verses:
"He is in manifest ḥusrān {i.e., in misguidance}." (an-Nisāʾ 4:119)
"Indeed, mankind is in ḥusrān {i.e., in misguidance}." (al-ʿAṣr 103:2)
4. al-Ḥusrān, in the sense of deficiency or causing deficiency; as in the following verses:
"Give full measure and do not be among the muḥsirīn {i.e., those who cause deficiency in measure}." (ash-Shuʿarāʾ 26:181)
"Do not cause deficiency in the balance {i.e., do not keep the scales short}." (ar-Raḥmān 55:9)
"But when they give by measure or weight to them, they cause deficiency {i.e., they diminish}." (al-Muṭaffifīn 83:3)
5. al-Ḥusrān, in the sense of punishment (ʿuqūba); as in the following verses:
{Nūḥ said}: "If You do not forgive me and have mercy upon me, I will be among the ḥāshirīn {i.e., those who are afflicted with punishment}." (Hūd 11:47)
"If You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will be among the ḥāshirīn {i.e., those who are afflicted with punishment}." (al-Aʿrāf 7:23)
