al-Karīm is interpreted in six ways:
1. al-Karīm is used in the sense of 'beautiful', as in the following verses:
And We will admit you to an entrance that is karīm (i.e., a beautiful place: Paradise). (al-Nisāʾ 4:31)
Indeed, to me has been delivered a letter that is karīm (i.e., beautiful). (al-Naml 27:29)
2. al-Karīm is used in the sense of being superior and valuable in position and rank before Allah, as in the following verses:
Indeed, it is the word of a messenger who is karīm (i.e., esteemed in the sight of your Lord). (al-Takwīr 81:19)
Indeed, it is the word of a messenger who is karīm (i.e., esteemed in the sight of your Lord), that is, Jibrīl. (al-Ḥāqqa 69:40)
Indeed, the most karīm (i.e., the most honored in rank) of you in the sight of Allah is the most God-conscious (muttaqā) among you. (al-Ḥujurāt 49:13)
3. al-Karīm is used in the sense of considering oneself superior and valuable, as in the following verse:
Taste! Indeed, you are the mighty, the karīm (i.e., one who considers himself superior and valuable). (al-Dukhān 44:49)
4. By the term kirām, Muslims / those who submit are intended; as in the following verse about the guardian angels:
There are kirām (honorable) recording [angels]. (al-Infitār 82:11)
5. By the term karīm, the blessed and exalted Lord, the One who forgives faults, is intended; as in the following verse:
[He is] the Lord of the karīm Throne (i.e., the One who forgives faults). (al-Muʾminūn 23:116)
[Solomon said]: "Indeed, my Lord is free of need and karīm (i.e., the One who forgives faults)." (al-Naml 27:40)
What has deceived you concerning your karīm Lord (i.e., the One who forgives faults)? (al-Infitār 82:6)
6. Karīm is used in the sense of 'virtuous / superior', as in the following verses:
[Iblis said]: "Do You see this one whom You have made karīm (i.e., superior) to me..." (al-Isrāʾ 17:62)
And We have certainly honored (karramnā) the children of Adam (i.e., made them superior). (al-Isrāʾ 17:70)
...and if He honors him (i.e., makes him superior) and bestows favors upon him, he says, "My Lord has honored me" (i.e., has made me superior). (al-Fajr 89:15)
