Nemudduhum [to extend them] is interpreted in five ways:
1. Nemudduhum [to extend them] is used in the sense of taking them away, inserting, or dragging them; as in the following verses:
Yamudduhum {that is, He drags them}, in their transgression
(that is, their misguidance) while they wander blindly. (al-Baqara 2:15)
But their brothers drag them {that is, they are dragged} into error. (al-A'raf 7:202)
2. Namudduhum [to extend to them] is used in the sense of giving/granting to them; as in the following verses:
We only extend to them of wealth and children {that is, by granting them}... (al-Mu'minun 23:55)
May He extend to you wealth and children {that is, grant you}... (Nuh 71:12)
We extended to you wealth and children {that is, We granted you}. (al-Isra 17:6)
Is not the help of your Lord sufficient for you, when He extended to you {that is, granted you} three thousand angels sent down? (Al Imran 3:124)
He responded to you: "Indeed, I am extending {that is, granting help to the Muslims} with a thousand angels, following one another." (al-Anfal 8:9)
3. The word al-Madd means uninterrupted/continuous/perpetual; as in the following verse:
Memdud {that is, perpetual/continuous} shade... (al-Waqi'a 56:30)
4. al-Madd is used in the sense of spreading; as in the following verses:
Do you not see how your Lord extended the shade {that is, how He spreads and lengthens the shade over the whole world from the break of dawn until sunrise}? (al-Furqan 25:45)
He who extended the earth {spread and laid out the earth from beneath the Ka'ba}. (al-Ra'd 13:3)
We extended the earth {spread and laid it out from beneath the Ka'ba}. (al-Hijr 15:19)
A similar expression is also found in Surah Qaf.
5. The word muddah is used in the sense of being leveled/flattened; as in the following verse:
When the earth is extended {that is, leveled flat and all upon it enter into it}... (al-Inshiqaq 84:3)
