al-Waḥy is interpreted in five ways:
1. The word al-Waḥy is used in the sense of the revelation that Jibrīl (Gabriel) brought down from Allah to the prophets; as in the following verses:
We have revealed to you (that is, We have revealed the Qur'an to you) as We revealed to Nūḥ and the prophets after him. And We revealed to Ibrāhīm, Ismāʿīl... (al-Nisāʾ 4:163)
This Qur'an has been revealed to me so that I may warn you with it. (al-Anʿām 6:19)
There are many similar verses.
2. al-Waḥy is used in the sense of ilhām (inspiration); as in the following verses:
When I inspired (that is, gave ilhām) to the disciples: "Believe in Me and in My Messenger!" (al-Māʾida 5:111)
Your Lord inspired (that is, gave ilhām) to the bee: "Take for yourself among the mountains, houses..." (al-Naḥl 16:68)
3. al-Waḥy is also used in the sense of a written thing; as in the following verse:
{Zakariyyā} gave them waḥy (that is, wrote a writing telling them to glorify): "Glorify [Allah] morning and evening!" (Maryam 19:11)
4. al-Waḥy is also used in the sense of command; as in the following verses:
He revealed to each heaven its command (that is, He commanded it). (Fuṣṣilat 41:12)
Some of them reveal to others (that is, they command). (al-Anʿām 6:112)
The devils reveal to their allies (that is, they command them through whisperings and by making their evil deeds seem fair). (al-Anʿām 6:121)
5. al-Waḥy is used in the sense of qawl (speech/word); as in the following verse:
Because your Lord has revealed to it (that is, has said to it). (al-Zalzalah 99:5)
