al-Yad is interpreted in three ways:
1. al-Yad; as the yad itself: it is used in the sense of 'hand', as in the following verses:
{Allah asked Iblis!: "What prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My own hands [bi-yadayya]?" (Ṣād 38:75)
Here, what is meant by yad are the blessed and exalted hands of al-Raḥmān (the Merciful). He created Adam with His own hand and said: "Indeed, Allah created Adam, the heavens, and the earth with the hand by which He holds them." Here, what is meant by yad is the hand itself.
No, both His yads (that is, both His hands) are extended. (al-Māʾida 5:64)
{Moses} drew out his yad (that is, his hand). It was white for the observers. (al-Aʿrāf 7:108)
2. Yad is used as a proverb for the hand in the context of spending [infāq and expenditure]; as seen in Allah's address to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Do not make your yad chained to your neck (that is, do not withhold your hand from spending, like one whose hand is tied to his neck and thus cannot open it / do not be stingy). (al-Isrāʾ 17:29)
The Jews said, "Allah's yad is chained" (that is, Allah withheld His hand from spending on us / was stingy; therefore, He no longer expands our provision as He did in the time of Banī Isrāʾīl). Rather, their own yads [hands] were chained. (al-Māʾida 5:64)
This is a proverb struck by the blessed and exalted Allah.
3. Yad is used in the sense of action / doing, as in the following verses:
Do they not see that We created for them from what Our hands have made among the cattle? (Yā Sīn 36:71)
Allah's yad is above their yads (that is, the favors Allah did for them are greater than what they did in the pledge at Ḥudaybiyya). (al-Fatḥ 48:10)
But it was not made by their own yads [hands] (that is, it was not from their actions / what they did). (Yā Sīn 36:35)
This is for what your own hands have sent forth (that is, because of your actions / what you have done). (al-Ḥajj 22:10)
