al-Naṣr is interpreted in four ways:
1. The word al-Naṣr is used in the sense of protecting (against future dangers), to be protected; as in the following verses:
No ransom will be accepted from anyone, nor will they be given naṣr {that is, they will not be protected from punishment}. (al-Baqara 2:48)
That Day no close friend can avail a close friend at all, nor will they be given naṣr {that is, they will not be protected from punishment}. (al-Dukhān 44:41)
Can they give you naṣr {that is, can they protect you from punishment}, or can they even protect themselves {that is, can they protect themselves from punishment}? (al-Shuʿarāʾ 26:93)
What is [the matter] with you that you do not give naṣr to one another {that is, why do some of you not protect others from the Fire}—
There are many similar verses.
2. al-Naṣr is used in the sense of ʿawn (help/support); as in the following verses:
If they fight you, we will give you naṣr {that is, we will help/support you}. (al-Ḥashr 59:11)
If they are fought, they will not give them naṣr {that is, they will not help/support them}. And even if they were to give them naṣr {that is, even if they were to help/support them}, they would surely turn their backs. (al-Ḥashr 59:12)
O you who have iman (faith)! If you give naṣr to Allah {that is, if you fight in Allah's cause until tawhid (the oneness of God) is established}, He will give naṣr to you {that is, He will help/support you against your enemies}. (Muḥammad 47:7)
Allah gives naṣr to those who give naṣr to Him {that is, to those who help/support Him so that tawhid is established}. (al-Ḥajj 22:40)
3. al-Naṣr is used in the sense of victory; as in the following verses:
Naṣr {that is, victory} is only from Allah. (Āl ʿImrān 3:126)
Naṣr {that is, victory} is only from Allah. (al-Anfāl 8:10)
Pour upon us patience and plant firmly our feet and give us naṣr against the disbelieving people {that is, grant us victory [make us victorious]!} (al-Baqara 2:250)
Our Lord, forgive us our sins and the excess [committed] in our affairs and plant firmly our feet and give us naṣr against the disbelieving people {that is, grant us victory [make us victorious]!} (Āl ʿImrān 3:147)
4. al-Naṣr is used in the sense of retribution; as in the following verse:
And whoever avenges himself after having been wronged—there is no blame upon them. (al-Shūrā 42:41)
If Allah had willed, He could have taken naṣr {that is, retribution from the disbelievers} upon them. (Muḥammad 47:4)
Indeed, I [i.e., Noah] have been overcome, so give naṣr {that is, take retribution for me from my people}! (al-Qamar 54:10)
