Ar-Rajm is interpreted in four ways:
1. Ar-Rajm is used in the sense of killing or putting to death, as in the following verses:
We will surely stone you {that is, we will kill you}. (Yā-Sīn 36:18)
Indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord from you lest you stone me {that is, lest you kill me}. (ad-Dukhān 44:20)
If it were not for your clan, we would have stoned you {that is, we would have killed you}. (Hūd 11:91)
2. Ar-Rajm is used in the sense of shatm [to insult, to utter harsh words], as in the following verse:
(His father said to Abraham): "If you do not desist, I will surely stone you {that is, I will say harsh words to you, I will insult you}." (Maryam 19:46)
3. Ar-Rajm is used in the sense of throwing, as in the following verses:
And We have made them {that is, the stars} as missiles for the devils (i.e., as means of casting [to serve as a basis for their conjectures and claims]). (al-Mulk 67:5)
They are only guessing at the unseen (i.e., making claims based on conjecture). (al-Kahf 18:22)
4. Ar-Rajm is used in the sense of malʿūn / accursed, as in the following verse:
So seek refuge in Allah from the accursed {that is, malʿūn / accursed} devil. (an-Nahl 16:98)
