as-Sawāʾ is interpreted in three ways:

1. as-Sawāʾ is used in the sense of being healthy, not ill; as in the following statement:

(O Zechariah!} Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three nights, while you are sound [sawiyyā] (that is, your tongue is not impaired and you are healthy, without illness}. (Maryam 19:10)

2. as-Sawāʾ is used in the sense of having a perfect human form, with a complete creation; as in the following verse:

{Gabriel} appeared to her in the form of a perfect man [sawiyyā] (that is, in the complete and flawless form of a human being}. (Maryam 19:17)

Then He fashioned him (that is, Adam}, completing and perfecting his creation}. (as-Sajda 32:4)

He fashioned you (that is, He arranged your creation}. (al-Infitar 82:7)

3. The word sawiyyan is used in the sense of being moderate, balanced, and straight; as in the following verses:

You will know who are the companions of the straight path {that is, the people of the moderate religion}. (Tā-Hā 20:135)

{Abraham said to his father}: "Follow me, and I will guide you to a straight path {that is, to the moderate religion: Islam}." (Maryam 19:43)

Is one who walks fallen on his face better guided, or one who walks upright on a straight path {that is, on a moderate / straight path}? (al-Mulk 67:22)
