al-Taṣrīf is interpreted in five ways:

1. al-Taṣrīf is used in the sense of removing / elevating, or turning; as in the following verses:

Our Lord, avert [aṣrif] from us the punishment of Hell (that is, remove the punishment of Hell from us). (al-Furqān 25:65)

We did so in order to avert from him evil and immorality (that is, to remove, eliminate, or ward off). (Yūsuf 12:24)

I will turn away from My verses (that is, I will turn them away from My verses and prevent them from leading others to kufr [disbelief] regarding My verses). (al-Aʿrāf 7:146)

2. al-Taṣrīf is used in the sense of diversifying, employing various styles in speech; as in the following verses:

And We have certainly diversified [ṣarrafnā] in this Qur'an for the people from every [kind of] example (that is, We have made various explanations in different styles). (al-Isrāʾ 17:89)

In His directing of the winds (that is, in His diversifying the winds between mercy and punishment)... (al-Baqara 2:164)

A similar example is found in Sūrat al-Jāthiya.

3. "Wa laqad ṣarrafnāhu" means: We have divided it into parts; as in the following verse:

And We have certainly distributed it [i.e., the rain] among them [i.e., the created beings in the world] (that is, We have diversified it: autumn rain falls on this land, autumn rain falls on another land). (al-Furqān 25:50)

4. "Ṣarrafnā" is used in the sense of directing / guiding; as in the following verse:

And [mention, O Muhammad], when We directed to you a group of the jinn (that is, We guided / directed them). (al-Aḥqāf 46:29)

5. al-Taṣrīf is used in the sense of 'udūl [to turn away from something, to incline elsewhere, to deviate]; as in the following verse:

Do you not see those who dispute concerning the verses of Allah—how they are turned away (that is, how they deviate from iman [faith])! (al-Muʾmin 40:69)
