Et-Teskīn is interpreted in four ways:
It alludes to the verse: In the disposition of the winds [in their turning about], there are signs for a people who use reason (Jāthiya/5).
1. Et-Teskīn means to settle / to find repose; as in the following verses:
He made the night a seken (that is, so that you may find repose / settle in it). (Anʿām/96)
It is Allah who made the night for you to rest in it as a time of stillness (that is, so that you may find rest and repose from weariness in it). (Muʾmin/61)
A similar instance is found in Sūrat Yūnus.
2. Et-Teskīn is used in the sense of nuzūl (to descend, to alight, to settle / to dwell); as in the following verses:
After them, We will settle you in the land (that is, We will cause you to dwell / settle there). (Ibrāhīm/14)
You dwelled in the dwellings of those who wronged themselves (that is, you settled in the places where those wrongdoers had settled). (Ibrāhīm/45)
We said: "O Adam! Dwell, you and your wife, in the Garden" (that is, you and your wife settle therein)! (Baqarah/35)
3. Et-Teskīn is used in the sense of finding intimacy, finding consolation; as in the following verses:
He it is who created you from a single nafs (the lower self), and made from it its mate (that is, Ḥawwāʾ), so that he might find repose with her (that is, so that he might find intimacy / consolation with her). (Aʿrāf/189)
He created you from a single nafs; then He made from it its mate. (Zumar/6)
4. The word et-Teskīn means itmiʾnān / muṭmaʾinn (tranquility, calmness); as in the following verses:
Indeed, your prayer is a seken for them (that is, it is itmiʾnān for their hearts). (Tawba/103)
He sent down His sakīna upon them (that is, He brought itmiʾnān into their hearts). (Fath/18)
