Ev is interpreted in three ways:
1. Ev is used in the sense of 'rather/on the contrary', or 'even', as in the following verses:
We sent him to a hundred thousand, ev {that is, even} more. (al-Saffat 37:147)
The command of the Hour is nothing but as the twinkling of an eye, ev {that is, even} nearer. (al-Nahl 16:77)
He was at a distance of two bow-lengths, ev {that is, even} nearer. (al-Najm 53:9)
2. Due to the presence of the extra alif letter in the word ev, it is used in the sense of 'and', as in the following verses:
Perhaps he will be reminded, ev (that is, and) will fear. (Ta-Ha 20:44)
...ev {that is, and} he would remember. (Abasa 80:4)
Perhaps they will have taqwa (God-consciousness), ev {that is, and} {the Qur'an} will bring them a dhikr (reminder). (Ta-Ha 20:113)
...as an excuse ev {that is, and} a warning. (al-Mursalat 77:6)
3. Ev expresses an option (choice), as in the following verses:
...to feed ten needy persons, ev {that is, or} to clothe them, ev {that is, or} to free a slave. {That is, you are given a choice among these.} (al-Ma'ida 5:89)
Their killing, ev {that is, or} their crucifixion, ev {that is, or} the cutting off of their hands {that is, you are given a choice among these}... (al-Ma'ida 5:33)
For him is a fidya (compensation) from fasting, ev {that is, or} charity, ev {that is, or} sacrifice {that is, he is given a choice among these}. (al-Baqara 2:196)
