Fevq is interpreted in nine ways:
1. The word fevq is used in the sense of something greater; as in the following verse:
Indeed, Allah is not timid to present an example – that of a mosquito or what is fevqihi (that is, something greater than it). (al-Baqara 2:26)
2. The term fevq is used in the sense of being superior; as in the following verse:
The hand of Allah is fevq aydīhim (that is, what Allah did for them on the Day of Hudaybiyyah is superior to their act of pledging allegiance). (al-Fath 48:10)
3. The word fevq is used in the sense of superiority in rank and nearness to Allah; as in the following verse:
But those who have taqwa (God-consciousness) will be fevqahum (that is, superior to the disbelievers in terms of nearness to Allah and their rank with Him) on the Day of Resurrection. (al-Baqara 2:212)
4. The term fevq is used in the sense of more/many; as in the following verse:
If there are women fevq ithnatayn (that is, more than two)... (al-Nisāʾ 4:11)
5. The word fevq is used in the sense of 'above/upon'; as in the following verses:
He raised some of you fevq baʿḍin (that is, He elevated the wealthy above the poor in terms of provision in this world). (al-Anʿām 6:165)
We have raised some of you fevq baʿḍin (that is, in terms of superiority in this world, We have elevated some of you above others). (al-Zukhruf 43:32)
6. Fevq is used in the sense of victory; as in the following verse:
I will make those who follow you fevq alladhīna kafarū (that is, superior to the disbelievers in terms of victory in this world) until the Day of Resurrection. (Āl ʿImrān 3:55)
7. Fevq is used in the sense of 'above/upon their heads'; as in the following verses:
We raised the ṭūr (that is, the mountain) fevqakum (that is, above your heads). (al-Baqara 2:63)
A similar example is found in Sūrat al-Aʿrāf.
For them, from fevqihim (that is, from above their heads) are canopies of fire... (al-Zumar 39:16)
From fevqihā (that is, upon the earth) He imposed heavy pressures. (Fussilat 41:10)
From fevq al-arḍ (that is, from above the earth) it became massive... (Ibrāhīm 14:26)
I saw myself carrying bread fevq raʾsī (that is, above my head)... (Yūsuf 12:36)
8. With the word fevq, those who came from the east, from the upper part of the valley on the Day of al-Ahzāb, are intended; as in the following verse:
When they (that is, those who formed the army of al-Ahzāb) came to you from fevqakum (that is, from the upper part of the valley on the eastern side where the morning light comes from)... (al-Ahzāb 33:10)
9. The word fevq is used in the sense of sovereignty and overwhelming power; as in the following verses:
He is the qāhir (overpowering) fevq ʿibādihi (that is, His sovereignty, dominion, and command are above the sovereignty of His servants). (al-Anʿām 6:18)
(Pharaoh said): "We will kill their sons and keep their women alive. Indeed, we are qāhirūna fevqahum (that is, my sovereignty, power, and command are above their sovereignty, and with this sovereignty and dominion I will overpower them)." (al-Aʿrāf 7:127)
