The preposition fi is interpreted in seven ways:
1. Fi is used in the sense of 'together with'; as in the following verses:
He will say, "Enter among [fi] (that is, together with the communities) the nations which had passed on before you of jinn and mankind into the Fire!" (al-A'raf 7:38)
These are the ones against whom the word has come into effect among [fi] (that is, together with the communities) the nations that had passed on before them of jinn and mankind. (al-Ahqaf 46:18)
([Solomon] said): "Admit me among [fi] Your righteous servants" (that is, make me among the righteous in Paradise)! (al-Naml 27:19)
We will surely admit them among [fi] the righteous (that is, into Paradise together with the righteous). (al-Ankabut 29:9)
Enter among [fi] My servants (that is, together with My servants), and enter My Paradise. (al-Fajr 89:29-30)
Among [fi] the nine signs (that is, together with the nine signs) (al-Naml 27:12)
He made the moon among [fi] them (that is, together with them) a light. (Nuh 71:16)
2. Fi is used in the sense of 'upon/over'; as in the following verses:
And I will surely crucify you upon [fi] (that is, over) the trunks of palm trees. (Ta-Ha 20:71)
He began wringing his hands over [fihā] (that is, upon) what he had spent on it. (al-Kahf 18:42)
They used to travel about in their dwellings [fi] (that is, over their towns)... (Ta-Ha 20:128)
They used to travel about in their dwellings [fi] (that is, over their towns)... (al-Sajda 32:26)
3. Fi is used in the sense of 'to/towards'; as in the following verse:
Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for you to emigrate therein [fihā] (that is, to it/to there: to Medina)? (al-Nisa 4:97)
4. Fi is used in the sense of 'from'; as in the following verse:
Whoever is blind in this [fi] (that is, whoever is blind to what Allah has mentioned in this verse), he will be blind in the Hereafter as well (that is, blind to what Allah has mentioned regarding the Hereafter); and more astray in way. (al-Isra 17:72)
5. Fi is used in the sense of min ('from'); as in the following verse:
And We will bring forth from every nation a witness [fi] (in the sense of min; that is, these are the prophets). (al-Nahl 16:84)
6. Fi is used in the sense of 'with us/among us'; as in the following verses:
Did you not remain among us [finā] (that is, with us) for years of your life? (al-Shu'ara 26:18)
(They said to Shu'ayb): "Indeed, we see you among us [finā] (that is, with us) as weak." (Hud 11:91)
O Salih! You were among us [finā] (that is, with us) one in whom hope was placed before this. (Hud 11:62)
7. Finā is used in the sense of 'for us, on our behalf'; as in the following verses:
And strive for Allah [fillāhi] with the striving due to Him (that is, act for Us, for Allah as is His due)! (al-Hajj 22:78)
And those who strive for Us [finā] (that is, those who act for Us), We will surely guide them to Our ways. (al-Ankabut 29:69)
