Meswā is interpreted in three ways:
1. Meswā is used in the sense of maʾwā (refuge, shelter); as in the following verses:
Allah knows your place of turning and your meswā (that is, your maʾwā: the place to which you seek refuge, your shelter). (Muḥammad 47:19)
Their meswā (that is, their maʾwā: their shelter) is the Fire. (Muḥammad 47:12)
How evil is the meswā (that is, the maʾwā: the shelter) of the arrogant! (al-Zumar 39:72)
If they are able to endure, the Fire will be a meswā (that is, a maʾwā: a shelter) for them. (Fussilat 41:24)
2. Meswā is used in the sense of manzil (station, position); as in the following verses:
Hold his meswā in high/honorable regard (that is, keep his station/position in good regard)! (Yūsuf 12:21)
Indeed, he is my master. He has given me a good meswā (that is, a good station, a good position). (Yūsuf 12:23)
3. al-Sawā is used in the sense of residing in a place; as in the following verse:
You (that is, O Muḥammad) did not reside (sawā, sāwiyan) among the people of Madyan (that is, you were not one who dwelled in Madyan so that you might know their circumstances and inform the people of Mecca of their situation). (al-Qaṣaṣ 28:45)
