Muʿjizīn is interpreted in two ways:
1. Muʿjizīn is used in the sense of sābiqīn (those who go ahead, those who surpass, those who are saved); as in the following verses:
You are not muʿjizīn [those who can render Allah powerless] (that is, you cannot escape punishment by evading Allah with your evil deeds). (al-Shūrā 42:31)
Indeed, they cannot render [Allah] powerless [lā yuʿjizūn] (that is, they cannot escape from Allah by fleeing). (al-Anfāl 8:59)
Know that you can never render Allah powerless [muʿjiz] (that is, you cannot surpass Allah with your deeds; you cannot escape from Him). (al-Tawba 9:2)
You are not muʿjizīn [those who can render Allah powerless] in the earth or in the heaven (that is, you cannot escape from Allah by leaving Him behind with your evil deeds). (al-ʿAnkabūt 29:22)
2. Muʿjizīn is used in the sense of musbitīn (those who hinder, those who restrain, those who prevent others); as in the following verses:
As for those who strive as muʿāʿjizīn [to render Our verses powerless] (that is, those who strive to prevent people from believing in the verses of the Qur'an), they are the companions of the blazing Fire. (al-Ḥajj 22:51)
As for those who strive as muʿāʿjizīn [to render Our verses powerless] (that is, those who strive to prevent people from believing in the verses of the Qur'an), for them is a painful punishment from filth [rijs]. (Sabaʾ 34:5)
A similar instance occurs again in the same surah.
