Tawallā is interpreted in four ways:
1. Tawallā is used in the sense of withdrawing, going away, or departing, as in the following verses:
Then {Mūsā} withdrew to the shade {that is, he departed and took shelter in the shade}... (al-Qasas 28:24)
Take this letter of mine and deliver it to them. Then withdraw from them {that is, depart and keep yourself aside}, and see how they respond. (al-Naml 27:28)
When he said, "I do not have any mounts to carry you upon"... those who withdrew {that is, departed from him with their eyes overflowing with tears}... (al-Tawba 9:92)
2. Tawallā is used in the sense of turning away, rejecting, or not accepting, as in the following verses:
(O Prophet)! Beware lest they tempt you away from some of what Allah has revealed to you. But if they turn away {that is, if they turn away from accepting your judgment}... (al-Māʾida 5:49)
Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah; but whoever turns away {that is, turns away from obedience to both Allah and His Messenger}, We have not sent you over them as a guardian. (al-Nisāʾ 4:80)
(He said to his people, Nūḥ): "But if you turn away {that is, if you turn away from iman (faith)}, I have not asked you for any reward." (Yūnus 10:72)
So turn away from them {that is, turn away from them}, for you are not to be blamed. (al-Dhāriyāt 51:54)

4. Tawallā is used in the sense of defeat, as in the following verses:
O you who have iman (faith)! When you meet those who disbelieve in battle, do not turn your backs to them {that is, do not turn your backs and suffer defeat / do not flee}! And whoever turns his back to them on such a day (that is, on the Day of Badr) {that is, flees and suffers defeat}... (al-Anfāl 8:15-16)
Yet before that, they had already pledged to Allah that they would not turn their backs {that is, that they would not turn their backs and suffer defeat by fleeing}. (al-Aḥzāb 33:15)
Even though the earth, despite its vastness, became constricted for you, and you turned your backs in retreat {that is, you turned your backs and fled in defeat}. (al-Tawba 9:25)
