Yasuddūne is interpreted in four ways:
1. Yasuddūne is used in the sense of preventing, hindering, or restraining, as in the following verses:
Those who disbelieve and avert [people] from the way of Allah {that is, they prevent people from the religion of Islam, from entering it}. (Muḥammad 47:1)
Indeed, those who disbelieve and avert [people] from the way of Allah {that is, those who prevent people from the religion of Islam}... (al-Ḥajj 22:25)
2. Yasuddūne is used in the sense of turning away, as in the following verses:
You see the hypocrites turning away from you repeatedly {that is, as they repeatedly turn their faces away from you and turn to others}. (al-Nisāʾ 4:61)
They turn their heads away, and you see them arrogantly turning away {that is, they turn away and act arrogantly}. (al-Munāfiqūn 63:5)
And among them is he who turned away from it {that is, he turned away from iman (faith)}. (al-Nisāʾ 4:55)
3. Tasaddā is used in the sense of turning towards, as in the following verse:
As for he who thinks himself self-sufficient, to him you give attention {that is, you turn towards him/turn your face towards him}. (ʿAbasa 80:5-6)
4. Yasuddūne is used in the sense of laughing, as in the following verse:
When the son of Mary was presented as an example, immediately your people laughed aloud at it {that is, they laughed noisily, mocked, and ridiculed}. (al-Zukhruf 43:57)
