When Abū Yazīd was asked: "With what does the servant (ʿabd) reach Allah the Exalted?" he replied: "With lameness, so as not to go to where He has forbidden; with deafness, so as not to hear what He has forbidden or anything other than Him; and with blindness, so as not to see what He has forbidden or anything other than Him." It was also reported to me that he said: "I found the following in my brother's book: Abū Yazīd was asked, 'With what did the Sufis attain what they have attained?' He replied: 'By not seeing what belongs to themselves, but by seeing what belongs to Him.'"
