ʿAbd al-Bāqī is the person whom Allah causes to witness His baqāʾ (subsistence in God), who, along with the fanāʾ (annihilation) of all things, is made to subsist by Allah's own baqāʾ. Such a person serves in order to attain the necessary and complete ʿubūdiyya (servitude) to Allah. In detail as well as in terms of jamʿ (union), taʿayyun (manifestation), and ḥaqīqa (inner reality), He is both the one who worships and the one who is worshipped. During the manifestation of the aspect of baqāʾ, neither the form nor the trace of the servant remains. (Kāshānī, 129; Jāmiʿ, 13)
