ʿAbd al-Barr is the person who is characterized, in both meaning and form, by all kinds of goodness (birr). Any type of goodness has not been attained by him through his own effort; rather, it has been granted to him—he is called ʿabd al-jāmiʿ (the servant who encompasses all virtues). He has not acquired any virtue or grace by himself; it has been bestowed upon him. Allah says: "Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets."
