ʿAbd al-Wālī is the person whom Allah has made a walī (friend of God) for people through the manifestation of His Name al-Wālī. He governs both his own nafs (the lower self) and others with divine governance. Among Allah's servants, he establishes His justice. He calls them to good, commands what is right, and forbids what is wrong. Allah has honored him and made him the first of the seven whom He will shade under His Throne, that is, the just ruler. His shadow on Allah's earth is the heaviest thing on the scale. This is because the good deeds and virtues of those he governs are also placed on the scale of the walī, without diminishing anything from their rewards. For the religion is upheld through him, and he directs the people towards good. He is the hand and helper of Allah. Allah supports (ta'yīd) and protects him. (Kāshānī, 124; Jāmiʿ, 12)
