and is the shāhid (witness) to its continuance. (In him) the word of Allah, "Whatever is on the earth will perish, but the Face of your Lord, full of majesty and honor, will remain" (al-Rahman 55:26-27), has been realized. For, since the servant rises upon the Face of the Everlasting (al-Bāqī, i.e., Allah), he endures with His baqāʾ (subsistence in God), and, by reaching Him, is secure from fanāʾ (annihilation in God). Some, indeed most, of the awliyāʾ (friends of God) have been characterized by these two attributes. (Kāshānī, 123; Jāmiʿ, 11)
