It is an act performed with an instrument. The hidden shirk (shirk-i khafī, concealed associating partners with God) is to resort to an instrument in a matter where no instrument should be used. This is nothing other than being a mushrik (one who commits shirk). For such a person is, in reality, only a possessor of knowledge. Every shirk requires a certain knowledge. The Real (al-Ḥaqq) seeks that knowledge as truth (He desires its acceptance, not its denial). The only aim is knowledge itself. Most of them do not believe in Allah; they are mushriks. The ʿulamāʾ-billāh (those who know Allah) have increased, and a large group of believers remains. They are in shirk, but they do not know that they are in shirk. Therefore, since they are unaware of the shirk they are in, they have not been attributed to shirk. But they themselves are not aware of this. (Futūḥāt, IV, 433)
