Although ān (moment) is a kind of time, in reality it is the boundary between the past and the future. It is like the hypothetical point on the circumference of a circle that is assumed to mark its beginning and end. Thus, azal (pre-eternity) and abad (post-eternity) are forms of time that have neither beginning nor end. They are without beginning and end, and are perpetual. That is, it is the present moment. This present is continuous. The cosmos persists under the rule of this present moment. Allah's decree in the cosmos also continues within the rule of time. In summary, both the past and the future are always under the rule of the present moment. (Futūḥāt, III, 529)
