The sphere of the zodiac is the atlas. Then Allah caused that sphere to revolve in the midst of this Kursī. Allah said: "By the sky possessing the constellations" (al-Burūj 85:1). The constellations are the decreed things in the celestial sphere. The atlas, which contains no stars and thus receives this name, is like a ring cast into emptiness in relation to the Kursī, just as the Kursī is in relation to the ʿArsh. Between these two spheres, the realm of rafraf (refrefler âlemi) has been created, which are the lofty degrees of ascension. There, the realm of human exemplars (insānī misāller âlemi) has been created.
Their glorification (tasbīḥ) is: "How exalted is the Essence of the One who reveals the Beautiful and veils the ugly!" The reason for this glorification is as follows: When one of us commits an act displeasing to Allah, the form of that act in the imaginal realm (ʿālam al-mithāl) changes at that level. Then, so that others do not see this alteration, a veil is immediately drawn between it and those present there. If the person ceases to oppose (the commands), the form returns to its original state. Thus, it is seen only as beautiful. For this reason, the phrase "How exalted is the Essence of the One who reveals the Beautiful and veils the ugly!" has become their glorification (tasbīḥ).
