is lower than him. (Jāmiʿ, 76)
To experience fanāʾ (annihilation in God) from all that is other than Allah (mā siwā) is the fanāʾ indicated by most of the Sufis (sufiyyūn). The ḥaqīqa (inner reality) of this is to experience fanāʾ from perceiving and sensing anything other than Allah. This consists in a person being in a state of absence (ghayba) from what he perceives, and this absence is from both what he perceives and from himself. For he, with his object of worship, is absent from worshipping Him.
