The section of bidāyāt (beginnings) (maqāmāt, spiritual stations) is divided into ten chapters. These are, in order: yaqaza (spiritual awakening), tawba (repentance), muḥāsaba (self-examination), ināba (turning to God), tafakkur (contemplation), tadhakkur (remembrance), iʿtiṣām (holding fast [to God]), firār (fleeing [from all but God]), riyāḍa (ascetic discipline), and samāʿ (spiritual audition).
