The realm of the nafs (nafs ālam, the world of the lower self) is divided into two parts: obedient (muṭīʿ, one who submits) and disobedient (ʿāṣī, one who rebels). The obedient is generally referred to as the realm of jabarūt (ālam-i jabarūt) and the realm of nafs (ālam-i nafs). According to them, this is the barzakh (the isthmus or intermediate realm); the disobedient are those who are the enemies of this city. (Tadbīrāt, 154)
According to Abū Ṭālib, jabarūt is ʿaẓama (azamet, majesty or exaltedness); according to the majority, it is the intermediate (wasat) realm (the realm between the exalted and the lowly worlds). (Iṣṭilāḥ, 540)
